Greene & Greene designed White Sisters residence. All interior Redwood woodwork had been painted over with white paint. We were hired to return it to its former glory. We were able to determine the original color after careful removal of some of the white paint layers. Prior to the painting the wood had been wire brushed with a grinder type machine and heavily scraped. Normally we try to retain the patina of the wood but in this case it was impossible as we had to sand the wood further than usual to eliminate the scratches. Once smooth and free of defects we were able to treat the wood with an aniline dye, oil stain and finish with lacquer.

The dining room had been built using 18" wide and 1" thick slabs of old growth Redwood. The owner had hired someone else to strip the wood but unfortunately wasn't up to the task. We finished the stripping and with careful sanding and staining we were able to transform the panelling.
